new dual screen reconstruction!

A special event presented by

THE CLOCK

Directed by VINCENTE MINNELLI

1945/dual screen reconstruction 2016/48 mins.

With Judy Garland, Robert Walker, James Gleason

With curator Bruce Posner in person and film critic David Thomson in discussion via Skype

In 1978, America’s premier film critic David Thomson (The Big Screen: The Story of the Movies) livened up a Dartmouth College film class with an ingenious 2-screen projection of Vincente Minnelli’s The Clock (1945) that simultaneously ruptures and enraptures the viewers take on Hollywood, Judy Garland, and all that is awe-inspring to us in the movies. A 16mm print was split into equal halves and played forwards and backwards at the same time in a side-by-side format, where the end meets the beginning in the middle. The visual-aural surprises play well today in the newly restored digital version produced by Bruce Posner in concert with The Department of Film and Media Studies at Dartmouth College.

In an interview with culture critic Griel Marcus in 2012, Thomson explains:

“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen an audience so excited. People were literally bouncing up and down in their seats. It made us all children again. This was a class of bright kids at Dartmouth. Everyone could see some of the implications and the consequences in it; could see what it was teaching us about narrative and shots because all films are certain shots.”

The film reconstruction will be preceded by the short film

A HOLLYWOOD EXTRA

Directed by Robert Florey and Slavko Vorkapich/1927/14mins.

with new music 2016 by Alex Lough and Carlos Dominguez.
